WHEN A GOOD HORSE QUITS WORKING, SOMETHING IS WRONG! ... I have never come across a good horse that has been working outstanding and suddenly quits working without having a darn good reason for it. Horses will work through a lot, especially the good ones but when they have reached their limit, something has gotta give. How else are they going to tell you? It's not like they can sit you down and have a chat about how they are feeling and what bothers them so they act out. Too many times have I seen a good horse do something out of left field followed by a rider insisting on more work and more drills after said act usually resulting in a hurt horse or a horse that acts out even worse because the problem has now amplified. Now I'm not talking about colts or horses still in training; unpredictable is part of the territory there. I am talking about finished, hard working horses that all of the sudden do something uncharacteristic of them. So if your good horse quits working, start analyzing what could be bothering them because chances are something is wrong.
